Winner of a 2008 Breakthrough Brits award (the UK Film Council’s high end talent initiative that celebrates a new wave of British filmmaking talent who are on the cusp of mainstream success), Hitchcock Award, the Screen Nation ‘Best Emerging Talent’ award and shortlisted for the BBC’s New Filmmaker Award. 

Kara’s film directing credits include: Nobody The Great (2007 – Winner of Cinequest Film Festival’s Viewers’ Voice Audience Award for ‘Best Feature Film’); Kara's award winning short films (Cheese Makes You Dream, Elephant Palm Tree and How to Make Friends) have sold to broadcasters such as HBO and the BBC and have screened at film festivals around the world including Sundance, Berlin and London. 

Kara’s writing credits include: Lolapalooza, a feature in development with Working Title Films; Boo! (BBC / Tell-Tale Productions) and Jim Jam & Sunny (ITV). Kara also has numerous writing credits in theatre and BBC Radio 4 – her most recent piece for theatre / Radio 4 Letting Yourself Go (White Open Spaces) ran for 3 weeks at the Soho Theatre, was broadcast in February on Radio 4 (Woman’s Hour slot) and was nominated for a 2007 Southbank Show Award (Pentabus Theatre – White Open Spaces). 

Kara has appeared on several shows including Channel 4’s “50 Films To See Before You Die”. She is currently developing two feature film projects: KILLER MILLER (a thriller set in Jamaica & USA) and BOOBS (a coming of age comedy drama).

EXECUTIVE PRODUCER for the Community Channel – Jane Stephenson: 

Before joining Media Trust Productions, Jane spent over 15 years working for the BBC and Channel 4 directing films about elderly care, breast cancer, drug and alcohol addiction and rape. As Creative Director, Jane has produced IVCA award-winning films for the charities Addaction, Being Breast Aware and Shelter. For Sky 1 she produced Abnormally Funny People which won a Superfest Award and for Channel Five the highly acclaimed series Mad for Arts and Mad for Poetry.

 

PRODUCER – Katie Segal 

Katie read maths and philosophy at Oxford University . She is a graphic designer, an I.T. consultant and is the sub-editor of a lifestyle magazine. Katie has coordinated several conferences and has extensive project management experience. 
There’s nothing Katie likes better than solving a problem, making the impossible happen and being part of a project from inkling to broadcast!

 

DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY – Steve Smith

Steve smith is an established stills photographer of 13 years, during which time he has worked on many major ad campaigns including Renault, London Transport and Mercedes, as well as contributing to Getty Images.

He is now turning his attention to working full time as camera operator/ Director of Photography and has worked recently on several short films, pop promos and commercials.

Steve’s photographs have been published on numerous occasions and his awards include AOP Judges’ Choice.

COMPOSER - Alfie Granger-Howell

Alfie graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a degree in Media and Applied Music in 2007. He was born in 1985 and grew up in Camden, North London. He grew up with a passion for a wide range of different styles of music and began studying the piano at age 5, later focusing on jazz piano. He is currently starting a career as a film and television composer, having recently completed the score for the film ‘Nobody The Great’ directed by Kara Miller amongst other projects. At the same time as pursuing a career in writing music for screen, he is currently involved in several dance music projects under the name Alpha Sounds. 

COMPOSER - Nick Harriman

Originally from London, Nick now lives and studies in Brighton. Currently heading into the final year of his Music Production degree at Brighton University, Nick also works freelance as a Drum and Bass artist with recent releases on ‘Molten Vinyl’ and ‘W10’ records.

As well as his freelance interests he currently works at “Brighton Electric”, a recording and rehearsal studios in Brighton, helping to run and build the new studios and rehearsal spaces.

Nick started playing the drums at age 10, and has been producing and DJing dance music for the past 5 years. Examples of projects he has been involved with are the setting up of an RSL community radio station, “Bounce FM”, that received funding from the princes trust, and writing and recording adverts and stings for broadcast on “Brap FM”.

DUBBING MIXER & SOUND RECORDIST– Martin Clarke

Martin Clarke is a sound artist and location recordist, based in 
Birmingham since 2003. He has a wide variety of recording experience 
from the sound of trains in Mongolia, sea in the Shetland Islands, to 
acoustic rock in the West Midlands.

He is as at home in the concert hall or studio as at the end of a 
long boom, running to keep up with dialogue and has worked on 
projects for TV, radio and internet broadcast, as well as 
international concerts, installations and festivals.

RUNNER – Kas Basma

After three years studying English Literature at Cardiff University and five years in the music industry Kas is now in the early stages of his career in television. He has worked as an edit assistant, runner and researcher, is currently working at The Community Channel and hopes to one day produce ground breaking documentaries! When not writing third-person profiles, Kas spends his free time experimenting with video editing and sound manipulation software.
